THE RULES

For the male of the species, it’s a three-man bar crawl where women are guaranteed to speak to you – because there’ll be Dating Safari women stationed there. You have 30 minutes at each bar to determine whether you’ve found some suitable prey to chat up. By the end of the adventure you will have visited five bars, spoken to up to nine lady creatures and will be, quite possibly, rather legless.

If you’re of the fairer sex, you’re given a lone watering hole for the evening to share with your three fellow huntresses. Every 45 minutes a different group of guys will descend upon you. Whilst there are no forms or tick boxes at this affair, there is a meet-up bar after the last group in case you want to follow up with a favourite.

IS IT FOR YOU?

While there was a no-show group of guys tonight (bad form guys!), the premise itself is strong and the communication from the organisers is solid and delightfully tongue in cheek. If you’ve got the right friends with you it has all the makings of being an abso- lute hoot regardless of the other participants.

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?

The advantage of being in the one spot is the bartenders are all ‘in’ on the festivities. If you’re lucky they may even provide you with their opinion on prospective suitors – if not a flirtatious interaction of their own. (Hee-hee, simper, etc.)

Only the brave (or stupid) say no to their editor, so when asked to go undercover as Time Out Melbourne’s intrepid speed-dating reporter, my response was: “Yes ma’m…” and “…can I borrow those boots?”

In one week I road-tested three speed- dating organisations, going on 38 ‘dates’, at which I had six awkward conversations, 12 inadvertent blushes and a nasty mid-week hangover. May that chubby little bastard with the bow and arrow be kind to you…

1. Speed Dating Melbourne

THE PREMISE

This is your no-bells-or- whistles, straight-down-the-line speed-dating affair. You’ll go on 18 four-and-a-half-minute dates, get a free drink (served midway through the session, so be prepared to dig in your pocket if you need Dutch courage on arrival) and some spring rolls – if that’s an incentive.

THE RULES

On arrival you’re handed a name badge and a scorecard. The card is split into two sides. One side is for ‘notes’ (so you can note who owned a yacht and a small island in the Caribbean), the other a simple tick box with ‘Date’, ‘Friend’ and ‘No’. This is how they will match you late

IS IT FOR YOU?

We’re looking at the suburbia of the dating world here. If you’re looking for a ‘nice’ guy/girl with a ‘good’ job and a safe car you could discuss consolidating your mortgage repayments until the buzzer goes.

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN? Some of the guys abandoned us in the break, which left ladies without dates in the second half, but for the most part people are friendly. As weekday entertainment it made par, but I personally wouldn’t surrender a Friday night to do it again.

COST: $48 AGE: Age bracket ranges between 21 and 35 depending on the event

LOCATION: Varies event to event, but it could be a gastro pub or bar in the inner southern suburbs

3. Silent Speed Dating

THE PREMISE

If you think you’ll scream the next time a date tentatively asks you, “So what do you do?” then you might be in the market for some silent speed dating. This small talk- free environment is part workshop, part dating.

THE RULES

You’ll be taken through six or so guided exercises designed to promote “conscious relating”. Basically, you’ll be sussing out someone’s vibe in a meditative manner. Boundaries and expectations are clearly defined by both male and female facilitators – so no trying to talk someone into going out with you in the break

IS IT FOR YOU?

It’s a little left of centre and takes a leap of faith, but it might just be worth it. This isn’t just about getting a date, it’s about exploring the way humans connect with each other. Of course, if you find a spunk with the positivity of an Oprah guru, we say go for it.

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?

I’m partial to a good ol’ chat, so it was a challenge to me – and would be to others who find silence or eye contact uncomfortable. But it’s a useful tool to observe the ways in which you perceive others. Once the small talk is stripped back, I’m able to deduce whether I feel comfortable around someone’s energy or not.

The guys at The Naturals in Melbourne have created a tick sheet of indicators to help you know if your good to go or if you should give the hell up and move on to they next lovely lass.

Their points are rated  from 1 tick suggesting “somewhat significant” to 5 ticks meaning “game on”!

She laughs a lot at your jokes and they aren’t particularly funny. ✔

Can be a strong sign but I gave this one tick because often girls can be nervous and laughing at your jokes is their way of releasing the awkward tension created between you two.

She tilts her head while talking to you. ✔

When girls expose their neck, it is their way of feminising themselves and making themselves more vulnerable so as to create that polarity. It can also, however, be a way of lowering their status to show empathy towards you.  A similar movement is when they dip their chin down and look up at you.

She asks a lot of questions. ✔

I know that when I’m not into a girl, I often default to a train of questions, because it keeps the conversation going without creating any emotional impact.  So, on one level it can be a good sign that she wants to know more about you – on another level, it could be her way of going through the awkward social pleasantries.  If she asks your name or your age early on in the conversation, this is usually a sign she’s interested.

She touches her hair a lot. ✔

This can be a good sign, although I tend not to focus on it too much, because often a girl can just be on edge and feel very self-conscious about how she looks.  Also, some girls just like playing with their hair, in the same way some guys like to play with their balls!

She forces rapport. ✔✔

They will shout “Aww, teach me”, or “OMG I want to do that”, to your boring interests.  They will also agree with most of what you say.

She touches you a lot as you are talking. ✔✔

This is generally a good sign, although it could also be that she’s just very animated and feels comfortable with you.  She could also just be very tactile.  Playfully batting you is a more progressive sign and if  her touch becomes a lingering trace with her fingertips, you can be sure she likes you.

She stands close to you, or lurks around you. ✔✔

As guys, we tend to choose the part of the train platform with the best-looking girl, sometimes even without being conscious of it.  Girls will also often lurk near the guys they like in social settings.  In fact, they’ll often stand with their backs to you, because it allows them to be even closer.

She accuses you of being a player. ✔✔

She is attracted to the badboy image you are portraying.  Never deny it, but instead put the pressure back on her by asking her to describe what a player looks like.

She maintains eye contact after a transaction. ✔✔

When you next get served by an attractive female bar woman or sales associate, look in her eyes directly as she hands you your change.  Most won’t reciprocate eye contact, but there will be a beautiful moment where if she does look back at you, you can feel if she is attracted to you or not.   (Of course, you must discern the ones who are just being ultra-friendly, but one can generally tell the difference.)

She mentions your girlfriend, even though you haven’t disclosed that you have one. ✔✔✔

This is quite common, and it’s their sneaky way of forcing you to state your relationship status without actually having to ask. It doesn’t hurt to keep them guessing.

She bumps into you on dance floor. ✔✔✔

A juvenile way of getting your attention. If you still go to student clubs, you may experience this one a lot. If they are hot and they do this, at the point they bump into you, grab them by the hips to see if they rotate their hips away or accept your hold. This will tell you all you need to know.

She asks if you are gay. ✔✔✔

I’ve had this one a lot and it generally means she would like to kiss you. I call girls out on it and they normally laugh in resignation. If you flirt too much, have a really high energy and don’t qualify them, this can also be what causes them to think it. Or, of course, you could be gay.

The “double look.” ✔✔✔✔

This is a strong indicator of interest, and women’s modern-day equivalent of dropping a handkerchief at the foot of a gentleman they like. It’s basically her way of saying, “Come get me.” If you don’t go in after this second look, then they won’t do it again and the attraction can vanish.

The “far away smile.” ✔✔✔✔

Make sure you smile back, but make it a sexy smirk out of the corner of your mouth, rather than a toothy grin.  One will telegraph that you are friendly, the other will be charged with sexual energy and she’ll feel it.  If she is close to you as she does this, approach her as soon as you can.  If she is across the room, then weave your way over to her in the next couple of minutes. She comes back from the ladies’ room with reapplied lipstick or lip gloss. ✔✔✔✔

She is making herself pretty for you, so escalate things and pull the trigger! She touches your chest as you are talking. ✔✔✔✔

Usually a sign that she’s very sexually attracted to you.

Her friend goes home and leaves you with her. ✔✔✔✔

Arguably the most obvious clue of all. If you notice this, have one more drink, then attempt to “extract” as soon as you can. The friend knows you’re most likely going to sleep together, so she’s leaving you to it.

Safariers…the witty and wonderful Sam de Brito explores with dating expert James Maclane which are the best cities in Australia for men to meet women.

Adelaide number one? Melbourne Girls less status orientated? Canberra a sausage factor? What do you think men of Australia?

His list of the best Australian cities for the single guy looks like this:

1. Adelaide

The Hidden Aussie Paradise. You’ll regularly see a really average-looking dude with a mullet, flannel shirt and a pack of Winnie Blues with a model-hot woman, dressed to kill.

“Seriously, hot girls will come and pick you up if you can dress OK and hold their eye contact,” says James.

He theorises that any male with a “bit of go in him” leaves Adelaide by age 21, leaving many extremely hot girls to fight it out for whoever’s left (that’d be the dude with the mullet).

“There also seems to be a decent population of attractive, international students in the city because of Adelaide Uni,” he says.

“The main negative for guys is that local, more ‘enlightened’ men, report struggling to find an interesting conversation with attractive women.

“It may be a little politically incorrect but there are hot Aussie bogan chicks galore with nowhere near enough attractive men to go around.”

2. Sydney

Awesome, if you know what you’re doing and tick all the boxes; otherwise it can be tough.

“For guys who know what they are doing and who tick most of the boxes, Sydney is very easy. Men have a huge number attractive, intelligent women (who will only date a certain kind of guy) and a large number of tourists to choose from,” says James.

On the flip side, he says it’s a brutal environment for women over 25.

“In Sydney (and Adelaide) you regularly see large groups of attractive women with no guys whatsoever. This would be rare in Melbourne and Brisbane and unheard of in Perth and Canberra,” says James.

“Even the most desirable women can really struggle here with the ‘man drought’. So much so, that many decent women just give up on dating altogether, making the dating pool even smaller for less confident guys.”

Still, James says many guys do struggle to attract women in Sydney for a variety of reasons.

(i) “Many Sydney women are just not prepared to compromise,” he says. “They only want the ‘dream guy’. There aren’t many of those to go around. And they get no shortage of attention.”

(ii) “Post-codes, schools and careers play a huge part in Sydney social life and many outsiders report that making friends with natives is very difficult”.

(iii) “Many desirable guys new to Sydney report seeing many attractive women by day, but have no luck ever finding where they go at night. It seems the private party scene is big and if you can’t break into it, it can be tough meeting great girls in bars. If you’re not skilled or bold enough to try to talk to girls during the day it can be a really difficult city,” says James.

(iv) “Kings Cross sucks in a huge percentage of the city’s most attractive women at night, leaving far less for other places. So, if the Cross is not your style, you’d think hot girls don’t go to bars much.”

(v) “The extremely high cost of living and spectacular property prices understandably can make some women fairly cautious in their choice of mate. A woman who grew up in eastern Sydney may need to marry a man on a reasonable income if she is to live near where she grew up, and be able to take time off work to raise her kids,” says James.

In this respect, he argues Sydney has become very much like New York and London: There are lots of accomplished, lonely people here.

“Many people’s lives seem largely work and career-focused and there’s very little time for anything else; dating, travel, arts, culture, sport, seeking some enlightenment, happiness,” says James.

He also says that, because of the huge focus many Sydneysiders have on their careers, many professional men aren’t particularly masculine and many professional women aren’t particularly feminine.

“Most exercise regimes seem to focus on the gym/running for both sexes rather than, say, masculine sports for men and/or ballet and salsa for women,” says James.

“I regularly see groups of eight immaculately-presented women sitting face-to-face at a corner table, seemingly expecting some super-confident, handsome guy to come up and make a sincere attempt at getting to know them in front of her seven friends,” says James.

Not likely to happen in this country.

3. Brisbane

Plenty of great-looking girls to go around, although James’s clients report struggling to find a decent conversation. Upgrade your style from a printed T, you might stand out.

James says it’s roughly a 50-50 gender split of attractive people in Brisvegas.

“Obviously it’s got great weather a lot of the year. Guys who learn a bit about style and go beyond the printed T-shirt once in a while might do really well,” says James.

“There’s plenty of party action on the Gold Coast; skinny, buxom platinum blondes and partying tourists galore and they’re just waiting for strong confident and athletic locals to come along and join them.

“Again for any brighter guys who are struggling in Brisbane you may want to give Sydney a try; a little bit of masculinity can go a fair way in the better suburbs, particularly if you up it in the style stakes,” he says.

James says these are his impressions of Brisbane, as “I’ve spent the least amount of time here of any of the cities”.

4. Melbourne

About average; maybe not quite so much glamour but far many more interesting and enlightened women.

Having run many events in Melbourne and dated lots of girls there, James says it’s roughly even-Steven for both sexes.

“Melbourne obviously lacks the weather and beaches that other state capitals have, and people tend to be a little less physically active and/or looks orientated,” he says.

“Many of the men and women tend to be more arts, culture and book-minded than the other capitals. In many respects, the cliche is true; Melbourne is a more enlightened city than the other Aussie capitals.

“Property prices and the cost of living are not horrendous (like Sydney), so the city seems a little bit less status-oriented, than Sydney or Perth. Another interesting thing about Melbourne is that the people seem to travel a lot more than the other capital cities, which makes them more worldly,” says James.

Compared with Sydney, it’s very friendly and both sexes seem to have a better sense of style.

“It also has a really social, fun-to-be-around bar and cafe scene. Unlike many of the other cities, the bars and clubs aren’t purely pick-up joints or meat markets; they’re just nice places to hang out in,” says James.

5. Canberra

Beautiful, clean, well organised city. But cold and everyone knows everyone.

“Canberra seems to be an oasis of highly-educated, cultured, enlightened, reasonably well paid men in high level positions in the public service,” says James.

“Guys really struggle here because of a relative shortage of women. I’d bet any half decent woman living here would have a very easy time of it with dating,” he says.

Intelligent, single Sydney girls might consider the three-hour drive.

6. Perth

Extremely tough. Armies of tall, athletic, masculine men and just a few seriously hot girls to go round. Remember, though, a little bit of style and culture can go a long way with some of the best ladies.

James says dating can be very tough for guys, yet for fit, reasonably attractive women it’s very easy.

“There’s a small number of extremely attractive women (the city is famous for models) and, because of the weather, everything is always on display. It seems there are 10 tall, athletic, masculine, highly-paid guys for each hot girl,” says James.

“It has a heavy, almost-overwhelming sport, beach, drinking culture compared to most other places in Australia. It seems to be an extremely masculine place, even in the really wealthy places.

“Because of the weather, it’s really a minimal clothing city so men and women must stay in shape. Fit, attractive women have it very easy,” he says.

However, thanks to the mining boom you’ll also encounter “materialism, status-consciousness on a grand scale”.

“A little bit of good news: guys who are just a bit more enlightened, better dressed and more well read than average can find a really powerful niche in Perth. This would be among the really beautiful women, who are not willing to date just another beer swilling, surfing, footy player,” says James.

“For the many Perth guys who really do struggle, consider getting some style advice and maybe taking your annual holiday in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, where there are large numbers of attractive, educated women just waiting for masculine, single guys,” he says.

NB: Billabong hat, singlet, boardies and thongs with Oakley’s sunglasses won’t get you far here, however.
